Born Denis Quilliard, he acquired his soubriquet as a chain-smoking teenager (Jacno was the graphic designer who created the Gauloises cigarettes logo, and he deserves a post for himself in this blog, by the way).
Jacno meets the Uruguayan Elli Medeiros in 1973 during a student demonstration. They become an item and, three years later, form the Stinky Toys. They play with the Sex Pistols and The Clash at the 100 Club punk festival, and appear on the cover of the Melody Maker.
When Andy Warhol arrives at Orly airport in the summer of 1977 — having been invited to attend the inauguration of the Pompidou Centre – the Pope of Pop is sporting a Jacno badge. Over the following days, Warhol would court the young musician assiduously (albeit unsuccessfully), famously painting his portrait on a restaurant tablecloth using a borrowed make-up kit.
It is also rumoured that Blondie’s ‘Denis’ (‘Denis Denis, oh with your eyes so blue/Denis Denis, I’ve got a crush on you’) is actually about none other than Jacno.
This is the original ‘Denise’ by Randy & The Rainbows:
In 1980 Jacno releases his first solo mini album, with four instrumental tracks (the megahit ‘Rectangle’ among them) and a vocal track featuring Elli. It’s a beautiful record, which I recommend strongly. This clip for the album is one of the very first things that currently renowned film-maker Olivier Assayas ever shot:
Jacno also produced hits in the 80s for the likes of Lio, Mathématiques Modernes and Etienne Daho. Elli & Jacno sold millions of records in their country and in 1984, before splitting up, wrote the soundtrack for Eric Rohmer’s ‘Full Moon in Paris’:
Jacno’s post-Elli career is also worth checking out, but I’ll return to that some other day.
… but we don’t want your pockets to freeze, so the Loreak Mendian™ Shops are giving away via Facebook a few hat+scarf packs that will help you make it through the blizzard.
All you have to do is convince two of your friends to become Loreak Mendian Shops fans –it’s that easy, just check the rules. If you want to take part, please do it before the 14th of February at 11 am.
One more month, here are our friends of Have a Nice Book with their particular selection of photography-books-turned-into-videos:
This week we have uploaded the 50th video of Have a Nice Book. It’s a nice figure and a good excuse to bring you a small summary of what you will find if you have a look at our web.
A couple of basic classics that should really belong in your library, for reasons of both quality and affordability: Eggleston’s Guide (above) and Soth’s Niagara (below), what a pair!
The purpose of this blog was always to combine classics by big publishers with self-published stuff – you know, those low-budget, lovingly assembled books. A good example of good results for very little cash is Eloi Gimeno’s Helsinki.
These two Spanish books were featured in every self-respecting list of best-published books in 2011: Julián Barón’s Censura and Ricardo Cases’ Paloma al Aire (thumbs up!).
The audience’s verdict? The most visited book in our blog is Rinko Kawauchi’s Illuminance. Surely there’s a reason…
If you want to see more videos, all you have to do is check our web regularly or become a fan of our FB. Long live Have a Nice Book!
